Itinerary Detail

We meet at the Fussen Train Station at 9 a.m. – early enough to accomplish a lot today, but late enough for the 6:51 a.m. train from Munich to connect with those who stayed overnight locally.

Our first transfer is to through the border tunnel into Austria for a scenic drive through the mountains to reach Ehrwald, the village in Austria below Mount Zugspitze where be board the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn cable car to the top.

Tiroler Zugspitzbahn

We take the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn cable car directly to the summit of Mount Zugspitze at 2,962 metres (9,718 feet).

The journey in the 100 passenger capacity panorama cabin is an experience in itself.  Glide almost silently up to the mountain and climb 1,725 metres (5,660 feet) in only 10 minutes.

Zugspitze sits on the border between Germany and Austria, and in fact the observation area at the top straddles the two countries.

Zugspitze observation deck

Walk into Germany and you are standing on Germany's highest mountain. (Austria’s highest mountain is the Grossglockner at 3,660 metres).

Walk around the German and Austrian platforms and have a hot chocolate inside in one of Zugspitze's Panorama restaurants or outside if it's warm enough.

Almost year round there is still some snow on the top, so do pack an extra sweater. Don’t forget sunscreen, as the wind and the height multiply the rays.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen, seen from Zugspitze

From Zugspitze you have breathtaking views across the tops of the two- and three-thousand metre high peaks of the mountains in this part of the Alps.

On fine days you can enjoy views of four countries – Germany, Austria, Italy, and Switzerland.

Mail your postcards from the top of the world and take the best pictures of your trip.

The Alps

We leave the Zugspitz region for a scenic drive over the Fernpass down into the Inn valley where we soon reach Innsbruck, the capital of the Tyrol.

Innsbruck is famous for many things.  Enjoy a walk through its quaint medieval lanes, see the little Golden Roof in front of the Karwendel Mountains, and the fine Baroque Church.

We have time here for lunch, a chance to sample the mouth-watering traditional Austrian dishes and pastries, and time for some exploring on your own.

The Golden Roof

Afternoon Option # 1

Later in the afternoon you can choose to spend more time in Innsbruck to explore or shop.

You will receive a ticket for an inside tour through the Hofburg (Imperial Palace), built by Empress Maria Theresia as a summer residence away from hot and stuffy Vienna.  Imposing furniture, large portraits, and elaborate chandeliers fill the sumptuously decorated rooms.

Innsbruck's Hofburg

Afternoon Option # 2

The bus will take you for a short ride to Wattens for a tour of the famous Swarowski Kristallwelten (Crystal Worlds), the crystal-themed indoor theme park of the world's luxury brand of precision-cut crystal glass.

A water-spouting giant invites visitors into the interior Chambers of Wonder displays and the world's largest Swarovski shop.  The surrounding grounds feature an Alpine garden and sculptures by famous artists in a natural setting.

Swarovski Kristallwelten

We depart from Innsbruck at 4:30 and return to Füssen at about 6.30 p.m.
