Lake Constance and its Islands Day Tour Model

Lindau

Lindau

Lake Constance

Mainau

Mainau

Treat yourself to a very special day and experience two islands in Lake Constance (or Bodensee, its German name).  It is the biggest lake of the northern alpine region and is surrounded by Germany in the north, Switzerland in the south, and Austria on the western shore.  Do not worry about the logistics of getting around.  Those important details will be handled for you.

We first visit Lindau, the only Bavarian city on the lake; the rest is part of Baden Wuerttemberg, the second southern state, or Bundesland.  Lindau in the Lake is a very charming town with old fortifications, a picturesque harbour, the Old Lighthouse, narrow lanes, romantic courtyards, and many fountains and hidden corners.

After early lunch we continue to visit the Island of Mainau, a paradise for plant enthusiasts because even tropical flowers grow in the mild climate.

Relax and enjoy your knowledgeable guide's running English-language commentary on the sights, the culture, the history, and the anecdotes.

Itinerary Detail

We meet at the Fussen Train Station at 9 a.m. – early enough to accomplish a lot today, but late enough for the 6:51 a.m. train from Munich to connect with those who stayed overnight locally.

Our first transfer is a beautiful drive through south-western Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg to Lindau on Lake Constance.

Lindau

Lindau is an ancient walled city on a near-shore island in eastern Lake Constance.

LIndau was first mentioned in writing in 882, and its narrow streets speak to its age.

Upon arrival in Lindau Island stroll along beautiful Maximilianstrasse, take your pictures of the unusual town hall (built between 1422 and 1436), and walk the little narrow streets.

Old Town Hall, Lindau

Continue your Lindau walk along the Lake Promenades where you will also find lots of great places for lunch.

There's lots of activity to watch in Lindau's protected harbour, and there are lots of opportunities for unique photos.

Lake Promenade, Lindau

We leave Lindau and continue along the northern shore of Lake Constance,
through one of the most colorful and fertile regions of Germany,
through apple and pear orchards, hops and vineyards,
through Friedrichshafen, the birthplace of the Zeppelin airships,
and on to Meersburg,
another beautiful medieval town on the Lake overlooked by a castle.

Lindau harbour

At Meersburg we board a ferry to cross the lake to Konstanz (or Constance), the city that gave the Lake its name.

Konstanz is also where the majestic River Rhine officially begins at kilometre “0”.

From here it is a very short ride to the Island of Mainau, the jewel in the Lake.

Approaching Konstanz and Mainau

Mainau is a 45 hectare / 111 acre garden island in west Lake Constance, and a paradise for plant enthusiasts because even tropical flowers grow in the mild climate.

The late Count Lennart Bernadotte, son of Prince Wilhelm of Sweden and the Russian Grand Duchess Maria Pawlowna, transformed Mainau Island into a floral wonderland during the more than 70 years that he lived here.

Mainau is now operated by an environmentally-sensitive trust foundation.  Mainau employs 350 gardeners and support staff during the flowering season.

Mainau

Palm trees grow here, oranges and other exotic treasures.  Mainau's designers and gardeners create formal gardens and dramatic floral sculptures.

The flower beds in the park glow from March until September in exotic colours, the colour schemes changing with the seasons.

In spring the tulips are in bloom as far as the eye can see, and in the palm house the orchid show invites.  In summer the roses fill with enthusiasm, as do the dahlias in autumn.

Mainau includes a palace, a charming baroque church, gardens, sculptures, park land, a children's zoo, and a playground.

Mainau

Southern atmosphere, colours, butterflies, and a thousand different kinds of splendour: Mainau presents a new experience every day.

Mainau's butterfly house, the largest in Germany, hosts 25 species.

Relax on your scenic drive back to Füssen, with arrival at approximately 6.30 p.m.
