Tours Itinerary

Day One - Concert Day

SEPTEMBER 18, 19, 20, or 21

The tour begins in Fussen at 8:30 a.m.

Arrangements can be made for accommodation the night before if desired.

We drive through Austria, along beautiful Lake Plansee, and back into Germany to Linderhof, King Ludwig's beautiful hidden castle, set deep in the forest between Fussen and Oberammergau.

Lake Plansee

Linderhof was built in an elaborate rococo style recalling the Bourbon Kings between 1870 and 1879, and was Ludwig's favourite residence at the time.

Tour inside Linderhof Palace with a palace guide, and take time to explore the park, the gardens with their sculptures and fountains, and other special features such as the Venus Temple and the Moorish Kiosk.

The Grotto carved into the hill above the palace features an elaborate recreation of the Venusberg Mountain from Richard Wagner's Tannhauser and is open to visitors.

Linderhof

We continue to Oberammergau where you have time for lunch and shopping or exploring.

Oberammergau is best known for its Passion Play, which respects a vow made in 1633 to perform a passion play every ten years spared them from the bubonic plague.

Oberammergau is also known for woodcarving, and its streets are home to dozens of woodcarver shops.  It is also famous for the "Lueftlmalerei," or frescoes, of traditional Bavarian themes, fairy tales, or religious scenes painted on many of its homes and buildings.

The town's year-round Christmas shops are popular with visitors from all over the world.

Oberammergau

Our next destination is the famous Wieskirche (The Church in the Meadow), actually situated in a peaceful setting amongst meadows in the foothills of the Alps.

Wieskirche was built between 1745 and 1754 in rococo style, and underwent a massive restoration between 1985 and 1991.  The interior is richly decorated in stuccowork in the tradition of the Wessobrunner School.

Wieskirche was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983.

Wieskirche

Then it's on to the feature attraction, Neuschwanstein Castle, King Ludwig II's first and most famous castle, built atop Swan Rock between 1869 and 1886.

We go to the village of Hohenschwangau and ride up to Mary's Bridge for the best views and photos of the castle.

Then we walk down for an inside guided tour of the castle.

Neuschwanstein was designed for Ludwig by Christian Jank, a theatrical set designer, as a homage to Richard Wagner, the King's inspiring muse, and many of its rooms feature themes from Wagner's operas, some incorporating then-modern technologies such as electricity to achieve fantastical effects.

After the inside tour and time to explore Neuschwanstein's courtyards, we take a horse carriage down and head back to the hotel to change for the evening event.  The organizers specify "Smart dress code".

Enjoy a nice dinner ...

... before you are taken up to Neuschwanstein again for your Classical Concert at 8:00 p.m.  Singer's Hall occupies the entire fourth floor of the castle.

Transfer after the concert back to the hotel for overnight.
